Children's Braces
Lots of people don’t have perfectly straight teeth and this is not necessarily a problem. Your teeth might be crooked or your upper and lower jaws might not be the same size. Orthodontists are
specialist dentists who deal with straightening teeth and correcting the way the teeth and jaws meet. We are trained to ensure that the results that we achieve are the best for the health of your
teeth and jaws and for your appearance.Today, braces are much less noticeable than they used to be. Fixed“train-track” metal braces are still used but we can also use braces which are the same colour as your teeth (ceramic), clear braces (“Invisalign”) or even ones which fit on the back of your teeth where no-one can see them (lingual). The wires that are used in braces today are made of a space-age material that straightens your teeth faster and more easily than they used to. The elastic bands that are used with the braces now come in funky colours too – so you could have red and green ones for Christmas if you like!
Sometimes we use removable braces for simple problems – we can make these in different colours too. We also use removable braces (“functional appliances”) to encourage the jaws to grow in a particular way – these will only work when you are growing lots (usually around the age of 11-14 years); this is why it is sometimes important that we see you well before you have finished growing.
